September 12, 2023 INFLATIONARY PRESSURES IN THE U.S PERSIST AS FUEL PRICES RISE In the following article, it was revealed that consumer prices in the United States experienced a larger-than-expected increase last month. This increase was primarily driven by rising rental and fuel costs in the U.S. economy. The inflation rate, which measures the pace at which prices rise, stood at 3.7% over the past 12 months through August. This figure marked an increase from the 3.2% recorded in July. These data highlight the challenges faced by authorities seeking to stabilize prices, especially after the rapid increase in inflation seen last year, reaching levels not seen in decades. Despite the inflation rate having decreased since its peak last year, it remains a concern for authorities as they aim to keep it close to 2%. The U.S. central bank has already raised its benchmark interest rate to the highest level in 22 years, with the goal of reaching a range between 5.25% and 5.5%, in an effo...

September 12, 2023 Pin and Kim: Friends in need (of ammunition) Vladimir Putin & Kim Jong Un have а lot in common … Both governments rail against the "hegemony" of the United States. Often a common enemy can bring leaders closer together. But both Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un see potential benefits from a closer relationship. For a start, North Korea has a huge defense industry with large-scale production capabilities. With Russia's war in Ukraine grinding on, Pyongyang could prove an invaluable source of munitions for Moscow. Washington suspects that Russia has already clocked that. The United States claims that arms talks between Russia and North Korea have been "actively advancing" with Russia allegedly seeking supplies of ammunition and artillery shells. Back in July Sergei Shoigu became the first Russian defense minister to visit North Korea since the break-up of the Soviet Union, when he attended events marking the 70th anniversary of the Korean ar...

August/21/2023 "Chandrayaan-3: India's Quest for Water on the Moon"   The search for water on the Moon is undoubtedly a significant milestone in space exploration and represents a major advancement in our understanding of our nearest celestial neighbor. In August 2023, India achieved a noteworthy breakthrough by successfully launching a prototype rocket named Chandrayaan-3. This rocket carried a module equipped with a remotely operated vehicle, intended to explore uncharted regions of the Moon in search of water. The central focus of this mission lies in the pursuit of lunar water, recognized as a critical resource for future crewed space missions and the potential colonization of the Moon. On the Moon, water is predominantly found in the form of ice within permanently shadowed craters. These craters offer an enduring refuge of perpetual darkness as they never receive direct sunlight, resulting in temperatures in these areas plummeting to lows as extreme as -248°C. Perman...

France plans to "ban e-cigarettes"

September 13, 2023 France plans to “ban e-cigarettes” (France is set to ban disposable e-cigarettes - known locally as "puffs" - because of the danger they pose to the environment and public health) . Speaking recently on RTL radio, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne said the measure was part of a new anti-smoking plan being drawn up by the government. It should be in force by the end of the year, campaigners said. Sold over the counter by tobacconists, disposable vapes in France cost around €9, less than a packet of 20 cigarettes. They are supposed to offer around 600 puffs - the rough equivalent of 40 cigarettes. Campaigners accuse manufacturers - many based in China - of deliberately targeting teenagers, using bright colors and a range of flavors reminiscent of the sweet shop, for example marshmallow, chocolate and hazelnut, watermelon, and ice candy. According to the Alliance Against Tobacco (ACT), 13% of 13-16-year-olds have tried "puffs" at least once. Most say ...
